WORLD WAR II

James Di Guglielmo

Company B, 20th Engineer Regiment

James Louis Di Guglielmo was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 24 August 1915. He entered service on 23 October 1941 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Corporal Di Guglielmo fought in every campaign of the 20th Engineers. His awards included the American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

Corporal Di Guglielmo landed with the 20th Engineers in the first wave of the 1st Infantry Division's amphibious assault on Omaha Beach. A newspaper interviewed Di Guglielmo and he recounted part of his experience on D-Day:

There was a big pillbox built right into the side of the hill and the guys in there had a clear view of everything coming in. Sometime late in the morning, [the Navy] brought this cruiser or destroyer in and he took a bead on that pillbox and laid it open. When the smoke cleared, those infantry boys were up and all over that place and they brought these German prisoners out that were all shakin' from the concussion. It was shortly after that that we finally got to movin' off the beach.
